Ensure the gas cap is on correctly. Hook your cable back up, start your vehicle, then turn it off. Cycle the engine three times, and feather your accelerator three times on the last cycle. This should reset the light. 

If none of the above nets results, you may need a new gas cap light sensor. Additional contributing factors could also be to blame. In rare cases, the problem could be a lack of pressure built once the fuel pump is activated.
