How to Rotate Tires on a Truck

Rotating tires

A lot of our Leominster customers like to work on their trucks themselves, and we respect that. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide on how to rotate tires on a pickup truck. Of course, if you would rather just have the experts do it, our helpful service department would be happy to help. Otherwise, follow the simple steps below.

How to Rotate Tires on a Pickup Truck

Rotating tires on a pickup truck isn’t difficult, and a lot of Fitchburg drivers have learned to do it themselves. One exception to this if you happen to own the rare pickup equipped with AWD instead of 4WD. In that case, you’ll want to schedule a service appointment with us as only trained professionals should rotate tires on an AWD vehicle. This is also the case if you need both a rotation and a balance. Otherwise, tire rotation is something you can likely handle yourself. Follow these steps on how to rotate tires on a pickup truck:

Pickups That Are Not All-Wheel Drive (4WD and RWD)

  • When to rotate tires: 6,000 to 8,000 miles
  • Switch the front left tire with the rear right tire
  • Switch the front right tire with the rear left tire

Dually pickup trucks (with two rear wheels on each side)

  • When to rotate tires: 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every six months
  • Rear inside tire on the right side: switch to front right side
  • Rear outside tire on the right side: switch to the inside
  • Rear inside tire on the left side: switch to front left side
  • Rear outside tire on the left side: switch to the inside
  • Front left tire: switch to rear left outside
  • Front right tire: switch to rear right outside

All-Wheel Drive Pickups (Fairly rare)

  • When to rotate tires: 5,000 to 7,500 miles
  • Do not attempt this yourself! Schedule an appointment with experts who know how to do a tire rotation for all-wheel drive vehicles!
