What is the Difference Between Used and Certified Pre-Owned?

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

The age-old question. Whether you need a quick refresher or you’re shopping for a pre-owned car for the very first time near Leominster, you’ll want to understand the distinctions between these two types of vehicles. While certified pre-owned (CPO) cars fall under used vehicles, they are not the same as other typical used models as they have more requirements according to their respective OEM and they are sold by certified local dealerships of that brand. For example, when you shop at Ron Bouchard Chrysler Dodge RAM, you’ll see that we have Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM certified pre-owned models. While we only sell new Chrysler, Dodge, and RAM models, we are still a CDJR dealership who sells Jeep certified pre-owned vehicles and can service Jeep cars. Learn more below!

CPO vs. Used: What You Need to Know When Shopping Used

Used cars have been owned previously, and come in a variety from the make, model, year to mileage and more. Due to these variances and the fact that they’ve had previous owners, they’re more affordable than new and CPO vehicles to the point where some are priced under $15K. When you are choosing a used vehicle for sale near Fitchburg, you should keep the following in mind:

  • While OEMs don’t require that standard used cars be inspected before sale, Ron Bouchard Chrysler Dodge RAM will inspect the models thoroughly and ensure that you will get the highest value for their dollar. If you decide to go to a private seller, you should approach a private sale with extra caution and take additional precautions to ensure the sales go through smoothly and fairly.
  • You should discuss any vehicle issues that you notice whether you’re buying from the dealership or private seller. If you plan to purchase the car even if it has issues, that’s 100% your choice. Just make sure you factor money for the repairs into your shopping budget.
  • With proper care and maintenance, some vehicles can last upwards of 200,000 miles. High-mileage used cars aren’t always bad options, especially if you’re on a strict budget. You’ll need to consider age vs. mileage to determine if a model is a good fit.

CPO vs. Used: What You Need to Know When Shopping CPO

Certified pre-owned vehicles have also had previous owners, but they aren’t your typical used cars. They’re thoroughly inspected and are backed by manufacturer warranties and have passed a rigorous inspection completed by a certified technician. They meet all of the OEM’s CPO program standards to earn the title. For example, the requirements for an Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, or RAM certified pre-owned model include the following:

  • Passed a 125-point inspection
  • Underwent a thorough reconditioning process using Authentic Mopar® parts
  • Offered with extended warranties and/or limited powertrain warranties, such as factory-backed 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, car rental allowance, CARFAX® vehicle history report, and more

These models are usually newer models with less mileage though they cost more than the average used cars. If you want more updated features or peace of mind in your Gardner drives, then you might want to buy a certified pre-owned vehicle.
