Are RAM Pickup Trucks Good in the Snow?

2021 RAM 1500 Plowing Snow

Whether shine or rain, RAM pickup trucks take on any challenges on (and off) the roads ahead, so snow is no obstacle. When winter arrives in Leominster, you can still count on your RAM truck whether you need to plow snow or work on a project. Discover more about the plowing and 4×4 capabilities of all RAM trucks as well as what some of the best winter tires for trucks are below with Ron Bouchard Chrysler Dodge RAM!

RAM 1500, 2500 & 3500 Plowing Capability

While you might already know that the light-duty model, the RAM 1500, can plow snow, the heavy-duty models– RAM 2500 and 3500– can also do the same! When you purchase a new RAM 1500, you can go for the available Snow Plow Prep Group, which includes a 220-amp alternator, truck-side plow wiring harness, and a rear power-sliding window with a defroster. This package doesn’t include the plow itself, but it basically makes the pickup ready to hook up the plow. What this really means is that all RAM trucks can be equipped with a snow plow, but you’ll need to purchase that and other necessary parts on your own.

RAM 4×4 Capability

What if you’re not planning on plowing snow with your truck, but you still want to commute around the Fitchburg area despite the snow and ice on your path? You might want to consider a 4×4 configuration or a model with 4-wheel drive (4WD). 4-wheel drive is available on all trim levels of the 2022 RAM 1500, 2500, and 3500 lineups except the RAM 2500 Power Wagon® where it comes standard. With a RAM pickup that has 4WD, you will have four to five different modes to choose from, so you can optimize the best control on your road conditions! Here are the modes:

  • 4-Wheel Drive Auto: Sends power to the rear wheels and engages 4WD automatically anytime the vehicle loses traction
  • 4-Wheel Drive High or Lock: Sends power to all four wheels for extra traction on loose, slippery surfaces (like icy roads)
  • 4-Wheel Drive Low: Delivers added traction with maximum pulling power for loose, slippery surfaces at low speeds
  • Neutral: Disengages the front and rear driveshafts (use for flat towing behind another vehicle)

Best Winter Tires for RAM Trucks

Besides investing in a model with the 4×4 system, you will also want to think about investing in the proper tires for the season. All-season tires will only get you so far in the wintertime, but when you have a set of winter tires, you’ll continue to tackle the Gardner roads like any other season. Depending on which RAM pickup you have or are thinking of getting, the best winter tires will vary, but here are a few that we recommend:

  • Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi3
  • Continental ContiTrac TR
  • Achilles Desert Hawk A/P 2
  • Bridgestone Duravis M700 HD
  • Firestone Transforce HT
